An interchangeably Spanish and English pronounced and defined name, Idea Academia serves both LGBTQ2SIA+ and Latine/a/o/x youth and young adults as they participate in a youth led, gamified setting that seeks to foster empowerment, resiliency, and leadership. Youth engage in STEAM oriented learning, that would otherwise be inaccessible and/or unsafe- all while developing interpersonal and socioemotional skills.

Deep and meaningful opportunities that encourage identity exploration/cultural development and understanding are offered and encouraged in combination with mental health support, academic support, and family involvement/support.

We seek to guide and engage youth in taking power by dismantling barriers that seek to oppress and marginalize QTBIPOC people, and building new systems in both fictional and real world situations.

Program Components

Youth Led

& Gamified Curriculum

Idea Academia embraces a youth led program structure that seeks to change the power relationships between those who are affected by oppression, marginalization, etc., and hold the power to address these issues themselves.

Leadership, resilience, and empowerment are cultivated in youth as they come together to decide topics that interest them most, barriers that most impact them, and skills they feel most strongly about developing. Youth hold the power of identifying within themselves and others moments of growth and award each other accordingly, furthering accountability and community building. They do this through giving themselves and/or others custom Idea Academia Loteria Cards that represent different Ideas (goals). These cards become measurements for participants to track their growth and, at the end of the program, they play Loteria (using their custom cards) with their families to celebrate their achievements.

Our non-competitive, gamified curriculum invites participants to directly use STEAM based and cultural learning in developing and nurturing Socioemotional learning skills and cultural knowledge. As participants explore nature, themselves, their communities and gain Loteria Cards that represent this growth, they develop dynamic ways to create a equitable and inclusive worldview that represents their identities and culture.

Identity Exploration

&

Cultural Affiramtion

The combination of personal and life skill workshops are essential for teens 14-18. Participants learn about mental health, triggers, emotional regulation, etc. at the same time as budgeting, resume building, financial aid, etc. Both personal and life skills are essential in supporting one hundred percent of oneself, both mentally and physically.

Participants old enough, with the need, are also able to engage in job training and transitional employment in order to support oneself, family, and their future.

Counseling

We offer counseling to all of our program participants. While some participants will seek counseling less than others, all could benefit from the professional techniques and skills taught by licensed counselors/therapists.

We work with underserved youth and young adults that could be experiencing homelessness, poverty, previous incarceration, trauma, discrimination, and more. Having accessible, safe, inclusive, and appropriate counseling services ensure that all of our participants have emergency mental health resources readily available, the development of positive coping mechanisms, and professional support.

Assistance and Connection with/to Resources

&

Academic Support

Assistance obtaining resources is essential in young people’s ability to obtain work, access education, or to apply for services. We walk through young people in filing documents, applying for scholarships/grants/aid, obtaining legal documents, and more.

Productive and safe academic support is not always accessible in schools,. Students could have diverse learning abilities and/or learning styles, unidentified trauma, and more. We see this and proactively integrated diverse academic assistance to support youth with these often ignored barriers. There is nothing “wrong” with struggling or resistant youth; rather, they do not have the informed support necessary to work though barriers.

Mentorship

&

Community Building

Building supporting community around youth can have incredible impacts on their lives. Whether this be with their family and friends, staff at Emerging Unidos, peer program participants, mentors, community partners, etc.

Because our participants are from diverse walks of life, both in identity and history, we ensure that each of our participant has a carefully vetted and trained mentor that makes them feel safe and comfortable. Our mentors come from diverse walks of life and hold identities similar to the youth we serve. They are representatives and stewards of the community. With weekly check ins, mentors are able to create meaningful connections to participants and support them through their time in our programs.

Trips

and

Activities

In our programs we integrate Inherently Non-Clinical Rational Activities (INCRAs) into our holistic curriculum. Just as ice breakers are used to “break the ice” between youth and help them get to know each other, INCRAs are used to assist them in de-escalating, feeling comfortable, and gives them permission to just be themselves. We have found that INCRAs create incredible group dynamics and assist in the development of skills that would otherwise be taught and forgotten.

In Idea Academia, youth lead with their passions forward. Within a guiding structure, youth hold the power to pursue topics of interest, award each other for achievements, and build their own “Space Base”

We combine INCRAs with culturally affirming and explorative trips to partnering organizations, volunteer events, outdoor activities, and more.
